Abstract: In this paper, the effect of random rail profile roughness parameter on the railway vehicle is studied. As a disturbance input, a power-spectral-density (PSD) function taken from Federal-Railroad-Administration (FRA) international standard is used. First, a coupled vertical vehicle-track system is formed as an affine-parameter-dependent function of the track roughness parameter and its influence on the vehicle dynamics is discussed in frequency domain. Then, for a range of track roughness parameters, a multi-objective controller is designed to improve the ride comfort without permitting any critical breakdowns on the safety performance of the vehicle. Later, a controller with fixed roughness parameter values is synthesized and the results are compared by using the frequency response plots and the root-mean-square values of the carbody accelerations and the wheel-rail forces.
